See the Elusive Cagle in Algeria
By Daryl Cagle | September 13th, 2009 | PERMALINKI’ll be spending ten days in Algeria next month at the 2009 Festival International de la Bande Dessinee d’Alger, their national Comic Con. I have to admit that I don’t know much about Algeria. My travel agency, which has been in business for decades, tells me I’m the only traveler they have ever sent to Algeria - but it looks like Algeria is full of cartoon fans. I’ve noticed that there seems to be special interest in editorial cartoons from all of the Arab countries.
Jan Eliot, who draws Stone Soup for Universal Press Syndicate, will also be in Algiers, along with a long list of cartoonists from exotic locales around the world - cartoonists so exotic that I’ve only heard of one of them, Tayo Fatunla, the Nigerian editorial cartoonist from our site, who blogged about last year’s Festival in Algiers and who actually lives in England. Here is a list of the cartoonists attending the event - please leave a comment if you have heard of any of them.
I’ll be giving at least a couple of seminars in Algiers and fans are welcome to come by and say hello. I’ll be on a panel of cartoonists talking about “Comics in the Cinema” at 2 pm October 15 at L’Esplanade de l’OREF in Algiers and I’ll give another seminar about my own work. I’ll blog and Tweet from Algiers and I’ll post more information on where I’ll be at the Festival soon.

Hi Daryl,
I write and draw Stone Soup for Universal Press Syndicate, not King.
See you there,
Jan

Hi Jan, Oops - I corrected your syndicate above. I look forward to seeing you in Algiers.
(Yes, it looks like Jan and I will be the only Americans there.)

I didnt expect to recognize any of the cartoonists on the link but they must be considered some of the best for each country. I sincerely hope you can get some of them to sign up at Cagles so that more Americans can see their work. It is always interesting to see how we look to others.
I also have enjoyed your process blogs. Very interesting.

I am working with a Make A Wish child who loves comics and loves to draw his own comics. His wish is actually to go on a cruise. I am wondering if anyone knows if there are any cruises that feature comics or Comicon type of atmospheres. That way he could combine what he loves with spending time with his family. Any ideas? Thank you. Meg

Hi I saw the veterans day cartoons, good stuff but it seems that there is a little confusion between Veterans day and Memorial day because some of the cartoons had graves or crosses on them, Memorial day honors Veterans and Soldiers which have passed on, Veterans day honors Veterans which are still alive, even though both days honors them they should not be confused.
Thanks

I love Jan Eliot\’s Stone Soup. You two are the only US cartoonists who will be there? Um, well, I guess that’s a representative sample. (? One classic cartoon, one political cartoon?) I look forward to hearing your comments on how the rest of the world sees us at the moment. And, for the record, I thought Jeffy looked cute with a beard.
