Old, Small Obama

Sometimes I like to vary the dimensions of my cartoons. Most editorial cartoons are the same 1 1/2 wide by 1 tall, which fits the cartoon hole that newspapers keep open for the cartoon. Sometimes an odd sized cartoon will jar an editor into running something different.
I did today’s cartoon extra wide, but [...]

From My Anti-Socialist Mail-Bag

Added 9/10/09: Here’s an interesting column about my Obama school speech cartoon (the cartoon is below) from a newspaper editor, responding to some very vocal complaints from readers who misunderstood the cartoon.

Subject: Cartoon question
Dear Daryl,
I just got a surprise phone call from a reader who was mad at me because [...]

More of My Sketches

Readers seem to like it when I post my rough sketches, so here we go again, with my sketches for my last couple of cartoons.  The first one is the Obama Healthcare Caduceus.  I do the rough sketch in hard pencil on slick paper, so I’m not tempted to do details and render.

Then I trace [...]

Blue Lips and Killed Obama Cartoon

Patrick Corrigan, the cartoonist for the Toronto Star, sent me this caricature of Obama (left) that his editor refused to run, because it was too much of a “racial stereotype.” I asked Patrick about the blue lips, because I’ve noticed that Thomas “Tab” Boldt, of the Calgary Sun and Cam Cardow of the Ottawa Citizen, [...]

New Obama Cartoon

I asked my followers on Twitter if they wanted me to keep posting the sketches for my cartoons, and the answer was a resounding “yes.”  I don’t want to do too much of this because the sketches are embarrassingly messy, and now the mystery is gone -but since you asked for it today, here it [...]

Obama’s Inauguration

I have to admit, the Obama inauguration excitement escapes me. I had to draw a cartoon about it, and my cartoon is below. Lots of readers ask to see what my sketches look like - that’s the line drawing below the color, and the rough sketch below that. Most people see the cartoon as the [...]

Cagle’s History of the Bush Years

Here’s a collection of about 40 of my Bush cartoons from the past eight years, collected into a chronological history of the Bush administration. Here it is as an MSNBC.com slide show. Let me know what you think.
There’s cartoons I drew for Hawaii’s Midweek, the Honolulu Advertiser, Slate.com and MSNBC.com in there.  I’ve moved around a lot [...]

How to Draw President George W. Bush

Political cartoonists are not much different from comic strip cartoonists; both draw an ongoing daily soap opera featuring a regular cast of characters. While comic strip cartoonists invent their own characters, the political cartoonist’s characters are given to him by events in the world.  For the past eight years, political cartoonists have been drawing little [...]

Celebrity Fires Consume the Media

A mandatory evacuation remains in effect for my neighborhood in Montecito after the devastating “Tea Fire” this week. My son and I stayed at my house longer than we should have, filling the cars with keepsakes and [...]

SARAH PALIN’S PREGNANT DAUGHTER

I’ve been getting an interesting response from editors to my cartoon that features Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter. Conservative editors write to me in disgust, saying that I was “over the line” by drawing the girl; liberal editors are writing to me to say “right on!” and “finally! Great cartoon!”
I can’t remember getting a response like [...]
