Courier-Journal Sports a Hand-Drawn Cover
By Rob Tornoe | April 10th, 2009 | PERMALINK
Today’s Courier-Journal, a Gannett daily newspaper out of Louisville, KY, is a work of art - literally.
The front page of today’s edition sports a hand-drawn cover produced by Turkish conceptual artist Serkan Ozkaya, a replica of the real front page (which appears on A3).
“We are in the business of communication,” said Publisher Arnold Garson. “This is just another way of doing that. I hope it’s exciting, surprising to our readers.”
The cover art represents a public art partnership among the newspaper, a local organization called artwithoutwalls and Turkish conceptual artist Serkan Ă–zkaya.
Ă–zkaya, 36, has done similar hand-copying projects at newspapers in Turkey, Germany and Sweden, as well as The New York Times, though The Courier-Journal’s collaboration is the first involving an American paper’s front page.
You can download a pdf of the entire front page here.

It is exciting. Wonder if it sold a few more papers. It should have!

I\’ve got to be honest, I\’d expect more in the way of craft. Has this guy not heard of a ruler? ?In all honesty the drawings aren\’t really of great quality either. Negative comments aside though, it\’s a pretty fun idea.
