Republican Senator Depicted as Assassin in Cartoon
By Rob Tornoe | July 27th, 2009 | PERMALINK
A Jeff Danziger cartoon that appeared in Saturday’s Washington Post has drawn the ire of critics that claim the cartoon is racially charged.
The cartoon, dated July 21, shows Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) perched on a fire latter with a sniper rifle. The caption reads, “Senator DeMint Can’t Wait to Kill Health Care.” An elephant representing the GOP exclaims, “Metaphorically, Jim! For God’s sake!”
The cartoon aims to jab DeMint over his comments that it would be politically advantageous for Republicans to halt President Obama on his health care reform initiative. “If we’re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo,” DeMint said. “It will break him.”
Critics claim that the drawing is reminiscent of photos of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where James Earl Ray shot and killed Dr. Martin Luther King.
“Supposedly the target is “healthcare,” but the cartoon obviously refers to DeMint’s remark about breaking Obama,” a poster remarked on the conservative website Hot Air. ”
“It’s not much of a jump to believe that the cartoonist intends us to imagine that DeMint’s target is Obama.”
Jeff Danziger was contacted but prefers not to respond, allowing the cartoon to speak for itself.

The associations that are raised here are all about shooting down people, not ideas.

Killing Obama’s healtcare reform will have the effect of killing many Americans. Maybe not directly but just as dead.

If the Republicans shoot down healthcare reform, the victims are the American people, who cannot afford the pocket-gouging plans the big players are trying to sell. Healthcare plans that are supposed to make lots of money for their big hedge fund investors have no real competitor right now. Republicans apparently like it this way, because their insistence on \"choice\" of plans means we keep only bad choices and introduce no meaningful competition to make these more efficient. I can\’t afford a health plan that has a reasonable deductible and coverage amount. Health care for profit\’s main goal is to drive down the % of their customers\’ money that they actually pay toward health care. When the Republicans killed Clinton\’s plan to try to fix this, around 95% of the dues went toward care. Now it\’s down to just above 80%. (Source: Bill Moyers\’ Journal, 7/10/2009) It\’s no wonder we are having a health care crisis. We elected Barack Obama to address it. We want a real strong reform. That probably means a public option or some method of creating a real competitor to the Wall St plans. Republicans who try to kill or cripple health care reform are putting more and more Americans in bankruptcy or worse when struck by a medical crisis.

Sure it’s close to the bone, but really what’s the point of having free speech if you don’t use it? It’s a political cartoon for fucksake, whaddaya want, Garfuckinfield?
