Live Blog: Cartoonists Respond to Obama’s Nobel Prize Win
By Rob Tornoe | October 9th, 2009 | PERMALINKI’m going to try something different here. I’m going to collect all the day’s cartoons about the unexpected announcement that President Barack Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”
This is obviously world-wide news, so I look forward to seeing how cartoonists from around the globe interpret this event, as well as how their opinions might differ with their American counterparts.

I agree with William. The staggering list of deserving candidates behind him shows that he should respectfully decline the award.

Nope William, that’s not gonna happen.
His ego is toooooooo large to refuse a NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.
And He sure has some awesome writers and his speech delivery is exemplary.
So be ready for some more kool-aid and some more loud words of HOPE and CHANGE.

I’m not sure who the other nominees were for 2009 but I am sure that they do not have the far reaching ability to affect as many lives globally as the President. Yes It might be a bit early but he has definitely set the ball rolling about his intentions in terms of ending the war in Iraq, ending nuclear proliferation, aggressively jump starting the Israeli / Palestinian peace talks, and also making diplomacy and the UN relevant and powerful again… which in itself will end up saving countless lives in the future.
He is definitely deserving. You can put a price or a prize on hope.

This Peace Prize is recognized as rewarding intent and direction more than accomplishment. I don’t think anyone could have expected the award, coming so early in the Obama presidency, but the right thing to do is to accept graciously and view it as a goal to be worked toward. And, by golly, that’s just what our president did. Remember the worldwide celebrations in the streets when Obama was elected? Inside the US people do not seem to recognize how hated we had become under GW Bush. We have an opportunity to regain our leadership position under Obama.

“Wag the Dog” is my only thought here. I would prefer more substance and less showmanship. Ego always gets American leaders in trouble.
I sure hope that Ben Frankly can’t see or hear this. He is one of my personal heroes and I am pretty sure that he and many other great Americans would be very disappointed in us and the way we are handling ourselves.

Those who would have the President decline the Nobel Peace Prize would then slam him for being rude to the Committee. He cannot ever win with Right Wingers, and thankfully he doesn\’t much try. He deserves the Peace Prize, has accepted it, and it\’s a matter of pride with real Americans. The rest of you can go sit on your hands or call into the Rush show and rant. No one cares. But please don\’t pretend your pathetic rudeness is based on patriotism.

What’s troubling about these is the way in which so-called political cartoonists so sweepingly get away with depicting President Obama as an exaggerated African American figure, a la Jimmy JJ Walker meets Dumbo. Cartoonists have always gotten away with racist sh**t stuff like this. Since I am out of the country right now, it’s hard for me to know if these are generating yet another 48-hour CNN/MSN/HLN/FOX new cycle (likely they are). But, for my part, while the messaging in some of the cartoons might be fair (criticisms of whether or not he deserves such accolades JUST YET), I am betting this opens the flood gates for much more so-called FREE SPEECH depictions of our president. Enter the right wing yet again, and not with grace.

Things take a while to turn around people, you can’t expect anyone to end a war, reverse a depression without a war effort, and end nuclear proliferation all in the first nine months of his presidency. Remember that Bureaucracy takes time: a whole lot of it.

Reading these comments is a sad commentary on America and why our democracy is ceasing to function. Pardon me if I’m just ignorant of the process, but couldn’t the Nobel Committee just wait a year or two until Obama actually did something worth rewarding?
I’m hearing a great deal of ignorant-but-wistfully-optimistic talk about “peace potential”. Seriously?!? It seems like the leader of the military with the biggest guns and most bullets has the greatest peace potential by default. I thought the Nobel Peace Prize was a prize for action, not unfulfilled potential. Maybe they should change this year’s award to the Nobel Peace Incentive. THAT would be change we can believe in.

Tate and you other Statist idiots: “This is a sure sign that the world has now renewed their respect for the United States as being a country of intelligent and gracious human beings.”
WHAT??? Did you look at the cartoons? Did you read where they were coming from??? The WORLD is as shocked as we all are… This is an obvious, egregious break from tradition relative to the very prestigious award committee.
Truth…declining the award is not the right thing to do…it would be an unpardonable offense. But a public admission by his Highness that others are evidently and eminently more deserving would be a nice segue into a discussion on what all his Hopes and Aspirations might mean to the world.
I personallly am no supporter of the man or his idealogies…can’t wait to see him in the rearview…but we are the USA, and we have to take what comes our way and move proactively through the chaos that surrounds us globally. Accept the award, thank everyone for their high expectations, and promise to renew the National focus on those things that we all want…Peace, prosperity and pursuit of happiness.
Oh, and an end to this socialist agenda…almost forgot that…

Seeing this man accept an award of this great magnitude and was not earned is just another indicator of his integrity. I had very litle trust or respect for him before this and if he goes to Oslo to accept the award, he will lose the rest. He isn’t even qualified to set in the same room with the likes of Sister Theresa or Rev, Desmond Tutu. It cheapens the honor for all future recipients that trully deserve it. Of course, it is a lucrative monetary award. Has anyone asked what he plans on doing with the money? I can’t wait to see that scripted response. Might even get him another one next year.

it is a sad day when there are people in the u.s. who cannot understand that they just won the honor of the rest of the world. like those who applauded when the u.s. was not chosen as the olympic site only because the president had tried to get the honor for our country. had a republican tried, they would have been devastated. they cannot understand the victory for all of the citizens as long as the president is involved. thye just cannot accept that they now have to say ’sir’ to a black man. their whole world is turned upside down.
it is not only sad but unbelieveable that some of our citizens would like their own ountry to fail, seemingly not understanding that they are the recipients of the failure and in time will have much cause to regret it.

Just a comment on the cartoons and racism: they are cartoons and drawn as such, to pick out the obvious physical characteristic and exaggerate is common. That isn’t being necessarily racist. Escpecially since this is a world-wide glimpse.
Another comment: Where I grew up and come from, a little bit black has always been black and thus, still, not as good.

It is so fifth grade to ridicule someone for being chosen to play when you are not and then claiming to not have wanted to play in the first place. There are so many small souls represented in these comments, a person has to wonder if they have ever been a winner. He won. It\’s as simple as that. You didn\’t. It\’s as clear as that. Who are the jokers that chose him? I think they all need to be replaced or the name of the silly contest be changed to “Most Popular Liberal”. That’s his only “accomplishment” and that is mainly because of his speechwriters. I read that Bill Ayers may have been a ghostwriter for at least one of his books. The man does nopthing on his own. To run the government he needs 35 czars and a bunch of worshipers.
Isn’t this the same stupid contest Jimmy Carter was picked for a few years ago too? I hope the prize money is not from our tax dollars, too. Give us a break!

The nominations for the Nobel Prize close at the first of February. Obama became president on January 20th.. So what did he do in those first few days as president to be nominated by he deadline? \"Something is rotten in Denmark\" or in this case Sweden. The Nobel Prize just sent its credibility down the toiled.

From published cartoons around the world and from the comments of many of the astute posters on this blog it’s obvious that unfortunately the status of the Nobel Peace Prize has taken a nosedive and will probably be looked upon henceforth with little regard. Today’s AP article sums up what a lot of people are surmising, ..”Indeeed, with a leftist slant, the five-member committee was applauding Obama as much for what he’s not –his predecessor”. (Byline by Jennifer Loven) So the prize has come down to being a political pawn, or maybe it has been for some time.
Politics aside, an award of this stature should be for an accomplishment - lots of good folks have lofty goals and intentions. I, too would be embarrassed by receiving this award for just “not being George Bush”.
Comment from Tim Stocken
Time October 10, 2009 at 8:48 am
If President Obama was somehow responsible for curing aids, cancer and heart disease, he would be criticized for putting health care workers out of a job. He was knocked for going to Oslo to lobby for the Olympics to be awarded to Chicago. Can you imagine if he did not make the effort and Chicago lost?
Rush said he now agrees with the Taliban on this. If someone said that about George W. Bush during his presidency, the Secret Service would be knocking on their door. Another class statement the right should stay from like the plague. If the Republicans truly want to rebound it is time they distance themselves from such nonsense. Just being conservative does not make one patriotic, and being liberal doesn\’t disqualify one from loving their country.
Call Me Conservative - you usually try to post with reason even if I don\’t agree with much of what you say. Here\’s a chance to review Obama\’s original statement regarding this award yesterday morning. It was covered by most networks so should be easily available. In fact he said almost exactly what you recommend. He said he was humbled and that he did not deserve the award. He added that he was uncomfortable being mentioned with the great people who had won the award in the past.
JK, you show the faults many Obama haters have. If you think he needed a ghostwriter for either of his books, or would have been stupid enough to use Bill Ayers for the job, it shows how vastly you underestimate Obama\’s abilities. You just can\’t accept the intelligence and fortitude he possesses.
One last thought. Any one who has used the N word in anger has no business talking about racism…

I would caution “John” that the international cartoons printed here and on the cagle website are, first, not necessarily a representative example of worldwide cartoons, and second, a reminder that most cartoons are intended to satirize the powerful, not endorse and honor. In fact some of these cartoons have the view that the NPP can be a burden to Obama’s efforts. Obama bashers on this response list aside, George Bush was so NOT conducive to world peace that I still feel like, along with the disasters he left for Obama to deal with, there was also a great vacuum sigh of relief around the world. If the prize committee got caught up in it, so be it. But I would have to honor their decisions more than some Limbaugh sheep’s posting on this board. After all, they are the people with their fingers on the pulse of world affairs. The NPP has sometimes been a prompt rather than an after-the-fact award. Hopefully, it will prompt Obama to resist enhancing the quagmire that is Afghanistan.

How unfortunate for Obama that six people in Norway decided to “honor” his “potential”. All it does is create another vehicle from which the Obama Haters can heap further disdain upon a man who has done little to change the courses of events started under President George W. Bush. Obama has been defined by the dreams of both his supporters as well as his detractors, but the reason he was given the award is because amidst all the problems of the world, “Hope” is what most live for.

While I believe it is correct and proper to criticize President Obama for our increasing unemployment, the out-of-control deficit spending, cramming an expensive healthcare bill down our throats, and for taking time from his duties to lobby for the Chicago Olympics, I do not believe he can be faulted for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. He was as surprised as everyone else that he won it based on intentions and rhetoric alone.
He made what I thought was a very humble statement saying that he did not deserve it. But if I were the President, I would not refuse the award either. Deserved or not, it\’s still an honor to receive it. The blame for giving the Nobel Peace Prize goes to the Nobel Committee, not President Obama. In the end, the Committee is free to give their awards to anyone they choose.

Nice to see the patriots trashing the President for winning the Peace Prize for changing the paradigm of our foreign policy; it fits neatly with their cheers when he lost the Olympic selection. El Rushmo, the intellectual giant, has sided with the Taliban on this one.
The President made a humble and gracious speech upon hearing of the award. It would seem a good thing to have our leaders and our nation respected instead of hated. A recent worldwide poll found that the US, since Obama, has moved from being the 7th most admired nation to the 1st. All Americans should be grateful and proud of this accomplishment in changing the world’s perception of our nation and signaling their willingness to work with us.
On the other hand, the minority of intense Obama haters (99% white) have illustrated their customary lack of grace and pride in their nation. Their first question was: whom shall we blame? Most of the cartoons selected to elicit crazy forum talk reflect an anti-Obama bias, when the fact is most Americans and most people in the world respect and admire this man who represents hope to the entire globe. A more robust satirical overview would have selected more cartoons which target the loony fringe of Obama detractors.
But they caricature themselves everytime they open their mouths.
Yesterday, Pat Buchanan, that famous leftist, said, in response to the far Right whining: What did he do wrong? What did he do wrong? He won an award. It is ridiculous to criticisize him for that. He has done nothing wrong. endquote
I know the wingnuts froth at the mouth at such thoughts, but I have stopped listening to the mean-spirited nonsense of this shrinking minority of the Know-nothing Party and address myself to the reasonable moderates and progressives who, today, are proud Americans. Right on!

Perhaps now, he’ll get that honary degree from Arizona? Maybe when he travels to Norway to meet the committee they will ask to see his birth certificate? Irony of the day, when Obama was selected to speak at the Notre Dame graduation, Mary Ann Glendon was to be given a special prize, she refused the invite and the prize on principle. see link = http://bit.ly/ND_2 http://bit.ly/ND_2
Of course Obama should accept the award and here’s why:
1. Everyone knows that when you play on the baseball team everyone gets a trophy.
2. He deserves it, remember the song from Sunday School … hum along now “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me…” Just singing this song makes us all eligbile to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. Lets all nominate each other!
3. I saw the President’s email to Organizing for America that the Nobel Prize really belongs to all those who have “dared to hope” so that means…. I’ve won it too!!!! I’ve dared to hope most of my lifetime, so I would consider myself an expert and daring hoper. Hmmmm I wonder if this means I get the prize money too, or just the hopey shout out?
4. It confirms our President’s world view that the USA is really a laughingstock to the rest of the world. Everyone knows that when you are laughing at people it is way more peaceful, (and sometimes laughter can be hopeful too!)
5. It sure will make Bill and Hill extra jealous. After all, Bill has that Global thingy and Hillary helped bring peace to Ireland.

I also applaud your more retional support of Mr. Obama as opposed to most of your mindless bretheren… Between us, it is nice to know that we can disagree and still be patriots.
If you really want to know what a constitutional conservative looks like I would ask that you read “Liberty and Tyranny” by Mark Levin. Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. CMC

He’s not a fascist…they may share statist views whcih clearly do not find a home in our constitution, but so far no Krystallnacht. If you can confine your thoughts to less emotional observances (which can be a trick, I know) you may have some posititve impact on edumacatin’ the folks who are just trying to be on “the right side of history”.

When I heard of President Obama’s award, I thought to myself, “Well at least here’s something all Americans can be united on and share in the pride.” Was I ever wrong! The vitriolic hatred of this man by a small minority (I hope) of foaming-at-the-mouth screamers is incomprehensible to me. Obviously they hate the man no matter what he does or what he accomplishes. I cling to the hope that this ugly side of America is just a tiny cancer and will be drowned out by voices of reason.

Mole - some people, much as you might hate to admit it, have calm and clear reasons for not liking Obama. The man has done a grand total of 2 minor policy changes that I’ve liked in 10 months. I didn’t like Bush, either. It’s not that I’d dislike Obama no matter what he does– if he pulls out of Iraq as promised, doesn’t get us into a quagmire (Vietnam-like) in Afghanistan, and changes his position on renewing the worst parts of the Patriot Act, maybe I’d think he was worthy of admiration. Until then, he is full of empty promises and no substantial action. He is the “ugly side of America”, not those who disapprove of his time in office.
Why have pride in an empty gesture? Americans have too much pride/nationalism, which has led to many problems in the past. Just because an American does or receives something doesn’t mean Americans have to “share in the pride.”

At least Al Gore’s NPP (not that I agree with GCCists) could be construed as peaceful but BHO, give us a break. He has escalated the war in Afghanistan, decreased troops but increased private contracors in Iraq (same # of total personnel), started bombing Pakistanis by drone (a lowest form of warfare) & has threatened Iran with violence. How peaceful? How anyone in their right mind could imagine that the president is somehow promoting of peace is loony. Where’s code pink now? Neatly in line! Pitiful!
And when are you partisans going to realize it’s not dem vs rep or right vs left or cons vs lib, IT IS THEM (THE ESTABLISHMENT) VS US (THE CITIZENS). The right vs left is contrived to keep us bickering while our freedoms are taken and our treasury is looted, it is the oldest military strategy in the book, divide and conquer.

I think, there lies a strategy.. by giving Obama the Nobel prize, they are pyschologically pressuring him to accept peace and follow the same for next 4 years, i.e. no war from America for next 4 years, inspite of so much disagreement for the same, Nobel is being sacrificed for peace? so that this might help getting troops out of Iraq and Afganistan .. what say?

Libertarian Girl - why do you think I would hate to admit that some people have “calm and clear reasons for not liking Obama.” That may be understandable, but I wasn’t referring to those people. I’m talking about the tiny minority (I hope) that have a vitriolic hatred for the man and ANYTHING he says or does. Read the posts and see him referred to as a “scumbag” and worse. See him called a socialist and a communist by those who are obviously ignorant of what socialism and communism are.
I disagree with your description of his award as “an empty gesture”. And while you’re correct that too much pride and nationalism leads to problems, having pride in your president receiving the Nobel Peace Prize is not dangerous nationalism. Of course you don’t HAVE TO share in the pride - that’s up to you. My point was that I thought that this was something that everybody could share, but yes, I was wrong. Some are so blinded by their hatred that they can’t even graciously give the man the honour he deserves for this. It’s sad. i think it would be possible to rationally “not like” Obama, and yet still admire this accomplishment.

I have nothing against Obama.
But I think he hasn\\\’t done enough to earn a Nobel yet. A Nobel Peace Prize.
But I think it should go to Japanese religious leader called President Ikeda of Soka Gakkai.
I think he deserves it anyday more than Obama.
Or Mahatma Gandhi, posthumously.

It’s really a shame that the Nobel prizes have steadily become more politicized and in the process have become completely meaningless. It really is a not very funny joke that a man can accept this award believing himself to be deserving of such an award when his portfolio is full of blank pages. I’m embarrassed for him; he’s apparently incapable of such feelings.

Frank Jones: “Obama in only nine months changed the perception that the whole world had about our country. Imagine what he can do in the following three years…”
Because we are talking about the Nobel, your sentence should have been “Obama in only 12 days changed the perception that the whole world had about our country.” The nominations were closed as of day 12 of his presidency . . . roughly half of which was spent partying to celebrate his Victory. BO had done nothing at the time of his Nobel nomination. Nothing.
Now, as for what he has done in 9 months to change the world’s perception of the US, let’s see: we are still at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Russia has become more aggressive. Iran has become emboldened and continues to threaten Israel and the US. The Taliban is back on the offensive in Afghanistan and BO can’t seem to make a decision on what to do. Gitmo is still in full swing. Unemployment numbers are closing in on 10% (despite BO telling us it would not reach 9% if we quickly passed the “stimulus”). BO spent more money in his first 6 months, than all other previous administrations . . . COMBINED. Instead of being the great uniter, he seems to be the great divider. He has hired more unconfirmed “Czars” than any past president. His behavior towards our allies has been an embarassment. I could go on, but this alone qualifies him as one of our worst presidents. If he continues as-is over the course of his remaining three-years . . . he will likely win that honor too. Carter must shaking in his boots.
But on a lighter note . . . in his first 9 months he has found time to go on several vacations.

US can do anything!
They can say they are fighting war against terror, but keep funding billions Terrorist Nations like Pakistan.
They can hide missiles on moon and ask the world to dump all nuclear weapons.
They can push the world into another world war, continue sponsor terror worldwide, but yet be UN member.
They can kill millions and then say they follow MAHATMA GANDHI. Do they know Mohandas Gandhi went on hunger strike for many days for the cause of all communitities. He walked miles on foot to show dissent. He made Muslims and Hindus brothers!
But what is US doing today? They are dividing mankind

Dear Callmephyfe and Judity,
This is the Nobel Peace Prize and not the Nobel Prize for Possible Future Achievements in the Area of Bringing Peace to the World.
As for the some of the rest of you: FOR GOD’S SAKE don’t pull out the race card here. I’m Indian, I’m brown, and I too think this prize to Mr Obama is ridiculous. And his acceptance of the award showed a lack of vision, the inability to foresee that he would be ridiculed, and above all the failure to have read the morning’s papers before he accepted, etc etc etc. This is a man whose election victory I celebrated although he had nothing to show for himself except good intentions and some good speech writers! Now I’m genuinely disappointed!

Everyone: The Nobel is not ‘American Idol.’ There is no number for you all to call or text your ‘vote.’ The Peace Prize committee doesn’t need your permission. The Peace Prize Committee is not based in the US, and the prize was not founded by an American. The question of whether or not OUR president ‘deserved’ the prize is equally asinine. None of you are bright enough or accomplished enough to be on the Nobel Peace Prize Committee and so your opinions are a waste of bandwidth. You are all confused and your grasp of reality is tenuous at best. Seek help, and please stay away from sharp objects.

Janice, we are NOT going to ease up on Obama if he accepts an award he CLEARLY does not deserve, nor will we relent in the yelling at the Nobel Committe for their OBVIOUS intrusion into AMERICAN politics. This award was given PURELY because of their SOCIALISTIC ideas(a ‘conservative’ in Europe is the equivalent of a liberal in America). Obama has not done ANYTHING to deserve this award and it is a political sham! And if that upsets you, who cares!
