That #&$!ing Cartoonist: Gays in the Military
By Rob Tornoe | October 21st, 2009 | PERMALINKLast week, President Barack Obama reaffirmed his campaign pledge to end the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy without offering a timetable or specifics on how he plans to accomplish it.
A reader of the Cape Cod Times was angered when she saw the cartoon above by cartoonist Dave Granlund:
“Don’t go to a gay physician, lawyer, watch an entertainer, listen to a musician because they might be gay? How sorry and sad. And hey! Watch that woman or man giving you your burger at Burger King or coffee and doughnut at Dunkin Donuts. Check them out immediately. Because they aren’t “real people”; they might be (gasp) gay!“

If a person is shot, they bleed; gay or not. There are predators in the military that feed on fear and bigotry. I am not gay, but I believe gays should have equal rights and protections. That should also include on the job. The military is a job, just like any other, therefor you shouldn’t be harassed over your sexual orientation. In the military, there are people that abuse others for being gay, a minority, or being a woman. That is wrong. The military seems to have a skewed view about how to handle the bad apples in their ranks. If I was in the US military, I would fear them more than if my fellow soldier was gay.
